Important JCEP/ APLU webinar
Navigating Uncertainty: Understanding Policy, Funding, and the Value of Extension Thursday, July 24, 4:00 pm Eastern
In times of funding uncertainty, there’s a unique opportunity to deepen our understanding of the processes that shape policy and to better communicate the value of Extension to decision makers.
Join Extension professionals from across the country for an insightful session exploring the latest developments and mechanisms influencing federal funding and policy decisions.
This session—coordinated by Dr. Doug Steele, Vice President for Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resources at the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU)—will highlight how collaboration and shared knowledge make us stronger during times of change. Dr. Steele will be joined by Christina Laridaen of Lewis Burke Associates, a government relations firm that represents Extension in Washington D.C.
Hear directly from those closest to the current and future landscape of Extension funding. Together, we'll explore what actions we can take now—and in the future—to showcase the vital role Cooperative Extension and the Land-grant System play in strengthening our communities.
Let’s learn, connect, and ed-vocate—together.
Registration required. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

IUFRO Small Scale Forestry and Extension Knowledge Exchange Conference
September 8-10 in Everett, WA By Kevin Zobrist Washington State University
If you have interest in Extension Forestry programming, you won't want to miss the IUFRO Small Scale Forestry and Extension Knowledge Exchange joint conference this fall. These meetings are held around the world each year, and this year it is being hosted in the U.S. by Washington State University. IUFRO stands for the International Union of Forest Research Organizations, which is a large consortium of universities and forestry agencies from across the globe.
At this conference you will learn about the latest research on small forest landowners with an international perspective that will give you new ideas for your own programming. You will also get to network and build relationships with your colleagues from around the world.
The conference includes two days of presentations on small forest landowners and Extension forestry programs as well as a full-day in-conference field trip that will visit unique community-managed forests. Stops will also include Snoqualmie Falls and the famous Ivar's Salmon House in Seattle for a Pacific Northwest buffet dinner. All meals and the field trip are included in the conference registration, and discounted rooms are available at the conference hotel.
Following the conference is an optional three-day post-conference tour of small scale forestry in volcano country. We'll visit several small forest landowners managing forests in the foothills of the Cascades, including the latest winner of the National Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year award. We will also visit both Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens, where you will see how volcanic activity has shaped the Pacific Northwest landscape, visit old growth forests, and stay at the historic Paradise Inn.
A discounted early registration rate is available through July 31st. |

Responsible Scalloping: Build Your Own Scallop Sorter |
Let ‘Em Grow: Scalloping Best Practices is an educational publication aimed at promoting sustainable bay scallop harvesting in Florida’s Gulf Coast. Developed by Florida Sea Grant Extension Agents, it provides recreational scallopers with best practices to ensure long-term population stability. The publication explains the importance of selecting only mature scallops for harvest and introduces the Scallop Sorter Tool, a simple yet effective device that helps scallopers measure and return undersized scallops to their original habitat. It also discusses broader management strategies such as rolling bag limits and later harvest seasons. By implementing these responsible fishing techniques, this guide helps safeguard scallop populations, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy this valuable fishery.
