Hello everyone, I hope you’re enjoying a fantastic summer, whether in the field or the woods. For those facing excessive heat warnings, please take care. Now, let’s mark our calendars for two essential conferences: the Extension Leadership Conference (ELC) and the Public Issues Leadership Development Conference (PILD). These 2025 events are scheduled for February 19-20 in Savannah, GA and April 7-8 in Arlington, VA, respectively. Keep an eye out for registration information!
Extension Leadership Conference (ELC): ELC focuses on building leadership capacity. Whether you currently serve or plan to serve as a state or national officer, this conference is a valuable opportunity. I attended the ELC conference held in Tampa, FL this year and had a great time. Topics covered this year included leadership skills for collaborations and partnerships, supportive AI tools for Extension, service in a national association, approaching conflict, among many others.
Public Issues Leadership Development Conference (PILD): Held near Washington, DC, PILD provides insights into connecting with decision-makers and understanding how Extension works with partners at the local, state and national levels. |
| The conference aims to: - Broaden understanding of public policy issues
-
impacting Extension and clientele.
- Enhance advocacy and public policy education skills.
- Address the impact of changing political environments on Extension support.
- Foster targeted communication with decision-makers.
-
Strengthen partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies.
- Encourage visits with federal legislators.
Planning a National Conference and More: Interested in planning a national conference and boosting your CV for promotion? ANREP, through the Joint Council of Extension Professionals (JCEP), invites you to join planning committees for these conferences. JCEP collaborates across professional Extension organizations, leveraging collective efforts of the associations. Reach out to me or a board member if you’re keen on these roles. And a big shout-out to Alyssa Vinson, Leslie Boby, Georgia Peterson, and Andy Londo for their current service.
Lastly, consider being a representative on the Extension Journal, Inc. (EJI) board. EJI sets policy for the Journal of Extension (JOE), ensuring high-impact scholarship while supporting author development.
Wishing you all a productive and engaging summer! |

2024 ANREP Biennial Conference a huge success!
The ANREP conference this past May was excellent, with 189 Extension professionals from around the country attending. Our hosts at Penn State did a great job organizing the event.
Highlights from the conference attendee survey:
- 98% of respondents said that the conference was completely (60%) or mostly (38%) worthwhile.
-
The top three reasons people invested in the conference were having time to network with national peers, having the opportunity to present (session or poster), and wanting to learn about natural resources Extension programs from other states.
- 92% felt they definitely had enough time to network with colleagues at the conference.
- 73% were extremely satisfied with their tours, and no one was dissatisfied.
-
Events throughout the conference primarily met people’s expectations, and satisfaction with the breakout session variety and number of choices was also high. The longer sessions (105-minute) were the least well received, but still received high marks.
- 82% of attendees said that they were extremely likely (55%) or very likely (27%) to attend the 2026 ANREP conference in North Carolina!
-
57% of the 63 survey respondents were first-timers, and the rest were evenly split between long-term and more recent return attendees.

By Grace Dean, University of California, Cooperative Extension
A unique ‘one-stop-shop' for forestry education based upon the OSU Extension model, California Tree School was piloted this year in both Mendocino and El Dorado counties. With overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants, it’s clear that CA Tree School was not only an event the community needed, but one they would return to next year.
